Overview

Electrical Infrastructure for Electric Vehicle Charging

ICEE’s EV Sector, ICEE-EV, was commissioned by Zest to deliver an EV Infrastructure upgrade at Touchwood Shopping Centre, including both the electrical enabling works and the installation of new EV chargers within the shopping centre car park.

The project required complex cable routing, planning and containment installation across multiple levels of a live commercial envrionment, while maintaining safe public access throughout.

Challenges & Solutions

Delivering within a live, multi-level environment.

Routing services across multiple floors required close coordination with the shopping centre’s facilities team to avoid disruption to daily operations. Working within a live car park also introduced space and access constraints, meaning installation works were carefully phased to maintain safety for both the public and site teams.

ICEE-EV’s experience delivering EV infrastructure in operational environments ensured the project was completed efficiently, safely and with minimal disruption.

New Zest EV Charging Bays

To support the EV charger installation, ICEE-EV installed a new 120mm² SWA sub-main cable, running approximately 135 metres from the main LV intake room located on the roof of the shopping centre down to the basement car park. The route utilised existing traywork where possible and passed through three vertical risers, requiring careful coordination and sequencing.

The sub-main cable was terminated into a newly installed distribution board within the basement, creating a dedicated supply for the EV chargers. From this point, a further 135 metres of new containment was installed throughout the car park, with each EV charger individually cabled, installed and commissioned to ensure full operational readiness.

The project was delivered to programme, meeting Zest’s technical requirements and supporting their ongoing rollout of EV charging infrastructure across the UK. Touchwood Shopping Centre now benefits from a reliable, scalable EV charging installation that improves accessibility for visitors and allows for future expansion as demand increases.
